ENTRY INTO QUEENSLAND

If you have been in a place outside Australia in the 7 days before arriving in Queensland, you are entering Queensland from overseas.

As long as you follow the Australian Government's eligibility requirements to enter Australia, you can enter Queensland without the need to quarantine.

If you test positive, you will need to follow this checklist and report your positive result through the Queensland Health website.

Everyone who reports a positive result will be contacted by text message with advice about managing any symptoms and questions to help assess their health needs. People with:

• mild symptoms receive advice on managing their symptoms at home as well as information about what to do if symptoms worsen.
• moderate symptoms will receive a phone call 1–2 times each day to check on their, continue to assess their health and provide any further advice and support
• severe symptoms will be referred to hospital.

Yes, all students will need to hold an eligible visa as listed on the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) website.

Make sure you have a valid visa for entering and studying in Australia well before your departure date and that you have all of your visa documentation (including Confirmation of Enrolment, or eCoE) with you before you get ready to fly. 

The Department of Home Affairs recommends that all international students outside Australia should check their visa status via the VEVO website prior to making arrangements to travel to Australia.

You can enter Queensland from elsewhere in Australia without restrictions.

However, it is important to note that in Australia, states and territories determine their own entry requirements. Students arriving in Australia would, therefore, be required to comply with the requirements of the state or territory they arrive in. 

Before travelling, students should check the international travel arrival requirements for the state or territory they intend to arrive in. Please be aware that further restrictions between domestic borders may apply between each state and territory.

From 1 January 2021, student and temporary work visa holders may have their visa cancelled at the point of entry to Australia by a delegate of the Minister who reasonably believes that the visa holder has contravened certain provisions of the Biosecurity Act 2015 (the Biosecurity Act). Visas may be cancelled if the visa holder has:

• knowingly provided false or misleading biosecurity-related information on incoming passenger cards, such as by failing to correctly declare all food, plant material and animal items;
• knowingly provided a biosecurity officer with false or misleading documents;
• failed to answer a biosecurity officer’s questions about goods or provide written information about goods requested by a biosecurity officer; or
• failed to comply with the directions of a biosecurity officer in relation to the movement of goods.

If you are an international student planning to study in Australia, it is important to check Australia’s biosecurity requirements when packing your personal items. Certain food, plant material and animal products from overseas could introduce serious pests and diseases to Australia, devastating our valuable agriculture and tourism industries and our unique environment.

Some products may not be permitted, while other products are only allowed if they meet certain biosecurity import conditions.

If you fail to declare, or provide a false declaration, you can be penalised. For example, you may be given an infringement notice for up to A$2,664. Your visa may also be cancelled and, if so, you may be refused entry into Australia and held in immigration detention pending removal from Australia. If you are unsure of an item, declare it, or don’t bring it at all.

Airport clearance is quicker if you don’t bring food, plant material or animal products. Most items can be easily purchased in Australia.

It is important to tell family and friends who are visiting you from overseas not to bring food, plant material or animal products into Australia. However, if they decide to bring these goods with them, then they too must declare them.
