European Research Council Grants: for Top Researchers from anywhere in the World

The European Research Council (ERC) is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. The ERC awards research grants to scientists from all over the world and in any scientific disciplines through a bottom-up, individual-based, pan-European competition. The ERC provides top researchers with ground-breaking ideas with very attractive long-term substantial grants that represent a recognised label of excellence.

Who is eligible? Post-doctoral researchers and established researchers (holding a PhD plus a 2 to 15 years’ experience) from all disciplines and all nationalities.

If you want to learn more about the ERC grants and get inspiration and advice from successful ERC grantees, join the webinar EURAXESS China and the ERC are organising on November 16, 16:00 (China time).

The aim of the webinar is to provide experiences and advice from both the researcher's and evaluator's point of view to inspire potential candidates among Chinese researchers and European researchers based in China.

There will be four speakers present during the webinars: an ERC panel member and three ERC grantees, who will share experience on how to apply to an ERC grant to potential applicants based outside Europe. Speakers will then engage in a Q&A session with the audience.

The webinar will be on ZOOM meeting platform. You will receive the details to join the webinar after registering by clicking on the above "Register" button. The registration to this webinar is free of charge.

Speakers:

ERC PANEL MEMBER, PROF UWE SAUER

Uwe Sauer earned his MS and PhD in microbiology from the University of Göttingen. During his postdoc work on metabolic engineering in the chemical engineering lab of Jay Bailey at ETH Zurich, he became interested in computational modelling of cellular behaviour and quantitative analysis of metabolic fluxes. In the late nineties initially as a group leader and since 2006 as a full Professor at ETH Zurich, his research began to focus on quantitative understanding of interactions and regulation within complex microbial metabolic networks. For this purpose, research in the Sauer lab takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines quantitative experimentation and modelling to solve fundamental questions of how microbes coordinate their metabolism. His lab has pioneered the development of quantitative mass spectrometry-based methods for metabolomics, enabling rapid hypothesis generation on the molecular and functional operation of complex metabolic networks. The current research focus is on mapping metabolite-protein interaction networks and understanding the in vivo relevance of allosteric metabolite regulation.

Prof. Sauer has about 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals over the last 5 years, and is a member of various editorial boards, scientific steering and advisory committees of international organizations and companies in systems biology and biotechnology.

ERC GRANTEE, DR HANSONG MA

Dr. Hansong Ma has been a Group Leader at Cambridge University's Gurdon Institute since 2017. Her research interests focus on mitochondrial DNA and its genetics. Previously she was postdoc fellow at the Patrick O'Farrell Laboratory, University of California at San Francisco (USA); she pursued her PhD at the Robin May Laboratory, University of Birmingham (UK). She is a European Research Council Starting Grantee 2019-2024 with funding of £1,315,832.

ERC GRANTEE, PROF MANUEL PEREZ GARCIA

Prof. Manuel Perez Garcia is the first (and so far only) ERC grantee based in China conducting as principal investigator the GECEM-679371 (Global Encounters between China and Europe) at University Pablo de Olavide (Seville, Spain). He is founder and director of the Global History Network (GHN) in China. He currently is Associate Professor at the Department of History, School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

ERC GRANTEE, DR LI DENG

Dr. Li Dengis Emmy Noether Junior Group Leader at Helmholtz Centre Munich and Technical University of Munich. Dr. Deng’s research focuses on the interaction between viruses and microbes in the environment and the human body. Her lab develops high-throughput, culture-independent, but host-targeted single-cell methods to study phage-host interactions. She received her Bachelor in Environmental Engineering at the Tsinghua University  (China), MSc in environmental science at the University of Nottingham (UK) and PhD in microbiology at the University of Bristol(UK), followed by postdoctoral training in viral ecology at the University of Arizona (US). In 2016, she was awarded the Emmy Noether award from the German Research Foundation  to establish her group at the Helmholtz center Munich and Technical University of Munich. In 2018, she receives an ERC starting grant, to develop next-generation phage therapeutics against multi-resistant bacteria.
