Thomas Clayburn is China Market Business Adviser – Education for the China-Britain Business Council. A fluent Mandarin speaker with significant experience working in the Education Sector, Thomas holds a master’s in Politics and Media in East Asia from the University of Sheffield, a bachelor’s in Chinese Studies from the University of Manchester and previously spent 4 years studying and working in China. Thomas taught English at a number of Chinese universities, before working for the British Council in Beijing; upon returning to the UK he worked for the University of Derby and Havas People before joining the China-Britain Business Council.

Ed Holroyd Pearce co-founded CRCC Asia which has sent over 10,000 (mostly British and American) students to Asia. The company is the delivery partner for the British Council’s Generation UK scheme.
In 2018, Ed co-founded Virtual Internships (virtualinternships.com), aimed at reducing the typical barriers to in-person internships and reflecting worldwide trends in remote working. Ed is passionate about employability, social mobility and speaks fluent Mandarin having graduated from Cambridge in Chinese. He has an MSc in international management from SOAS, and more recently an MBA from Cass Business School.

Mr Shan Huang is Deputy Managing Editor and Editorial Board Member of Beijing-based Caixin Media, equivalent to the Economist in China. He is charged with overseeing Caixin’s foreign desk and overseas branding efforts, with 15 years of experience in reporting on Chinese domestic economic & political situations, its external relations with focus on Chinese economic diplomacy.
Mr Huang was a visiting fellow with the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford in the trinity term of 2018. He served as a senior research associate with the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame for the period of August 2018 through May 2019.

Fiona Ma has worked with Accenture for 10 years, and her current role is Talent Strategist. In this role, she leveraged her deep insights from internal and external talent research and practice, and designed and built Accenture Greater China's market unit talent strategy and priorities, and also ensured that the designed talent strategy and priorities are well aligned and implemented to support Accenture Greater China's business ambition.
Before her current role, Fiona also spent more than 10 years as a Talent and Organisation consultant in Strategy and Consulting practice, working with the most prestigious Chinese companies to provide organisation, leadership and learning solutions to support their business expansion.
David Pilsbury
Deputy Vice Chancellor
International at Coventry University
David Pilsbury has been Deputy Vice Chancellor, International at Coventry University since 2008. He is responsible for all international activities including joint ventures, recruitment, collaborative delivery, curriculum internationalization, mobility and enhancement.
He has implemented an ambitious agenda including: a significant increase in recruitment (with almost 10,000 overseas students CU is the third largest UK recruiter; a further 5,000 students are recruited from continental Europe); making CU a major provider of programmes overseas, with more than 20,000 students registered for study in 27 different countries; developed deep relationships with leading research Universities overseas; and he has developed a sector leading enhancement agenda - Coventry has been the leading provider of overseas mobility experiences since records began – 7,000 students travel overseas from Coventry each year around 10% to China. This is delivered alongside extensive internationalisation of the curriculum activities, innovative language programmes and systematic intercultural training making Coventry home to world's largest international enhancement programme.
The scale and scope of activity has been recognised by many awards including a Queen’s Award for Enterprise – the most prestigious UK accolade for organisations - and the premier award of EAIE for ‘Innovation in Internationalisation’. CU’s international operation has 5 stars” from QS, and the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange recently named Coventry as ‘Best Overseas Partner for Chinese Universities’ for the second year running. Pilsbury is a fellow of the Hong Kong VTC, and a Board Member of a number of organisations including China-Britain Business Council, IDP Connect, The Higher Education Careers Services Unit, and Eurasian Universities Union. He Co-chairs the UUK International Pro-Vice Chancellors Network.
Pilsbury was previously founding CEO of the Worldwide Universities Network which became recognized as the leading global research alliance under his leadership. He was Head of Research Policy for the Higher Education Funding Council for England – where he oversaw a fundamental reappraisal of research policy and the creation of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Prior to this he was Assistant Director of R&D at Cambridge University Hospital.
Pilsbury spent a number of years in strategic consultancy and investment banking after completing a D.Phil and postdoctoral research at Oxford University.
Ting Ren

Professor Ting Ren is the Associate Dean and Director of Enterprises Development Institute at Peking University HSBC Business School. He received his PhD in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He is an expert in the research fields of industrial organisation, corporate governance, human resources and labor studies. He has published broadly in world class academic journals. His recent research involves with the application of big data and smart robotization in organisation and people studies. He has led numerous consulting projects in the Greater Bay Area for policy making and business practice. He also serves as advisor to both public and private sectors.

Lisa Umenyiora is the Executive Director of Careers at Imperial College Business School which supports 1,500 MSc students and 600 MBAs. She is responsible for the strategy and leadership of the Careers department, including Careers Consulting, Employer Relations, Careers Data & Technology, and Global Skills Development. Lisa is a senior leader with over 15 years’ experience within higher education and career services who thrives on creating impact by bringing structure to chaos, creating high performing teams, and driving new initiatives forward. Lisa holds a BSc in Social Anthropology, a diploma in Leadership & Management, and has a coaching qualification.
Isabel Xu

Isabel leads the education sector team in China and works closely with UK government and educational associations to advise on UK-China education collaborations. Prior to CBBC, Isabel worked for British Council China for ten years when she was heavily involved in both inward and outward student mobility programmes, TNE projects and alumni employability and entrepreneurship agendas. In the recent three years Isabel has been diving with British schools to explore opportunities in landing in China as well as investment acquisitions. Holding professional qualifications in digital product development and management, Isabel has profound experience in market intelligence and knowledge to digital education and technology innovations.

Prof Zhong Weihe is co-president of Kingold Group. He is also Principal of Huangpu Shuyuan. Before joining Kingold, Prof Zhong was President at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. His research area mainly covers interpretation theories and teaching, and translation studies. Prof ZHONG holds an Honorary Doctorate from Coventry University. He’s also an expert with special allowance from the State Council.

Recently, we examined the impact of COVID-19 on China’s tech sector, and Chinese and UK tech firms have responded to the crisis. Building on this theme, we will explore the opportunities to accelerate two-way trade and investment for technology businesses in the post-COVID world.

Tony Clemson

Tony Clemson has been the Deputy Director for Innovation & Industry in China since December 2019. He promotes greater cooperation between the UK and China in the Technology and Advanced Manufacturing sectors (autos, marine, advanced engineering, chemicals). He previously served as Deputy Consul-General in Shanghai from 2016 to 2019. In prior diplomatic roles Tony covered international cyber security policy in London, and political and economic issues in South Korea and New Zealand. Before joining the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2004, Tony served as a Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy for eight years, deploying to the Atlantic, Caribbean and Middle East.

Max joined what3words with a background in helping international businesses develop within the Chinese market. He spent time working with a wide variety of organisations from Skype to local NGOs, but most recently came from Shanghai where he managed operations for an American manufacturing company looking to expand their presence within China. In 2018, he was drawn back to the UK by what3words and their vision to build a truly global addressing standard. Within the company, he leads the business development function for Chinese expansion, working with partners across the automotive, mobility and travel industries.

Mark Hedley

Mark Hedley is Regional Director for Greater London, and UK Tech Sector Lead at the China-Britain Business Council.
A fluent Mandarin speaker, Mark has spent 15 years travelling and living in China, including six years permanently based in China. He holds a Masters in Chinese Business and International Relations from the University of Sheffield.
Mark previously worked for a Shanghai-based market entry consulting firm assisting Western tech firms to enter the China market. This work involved opportunity validation, business development and stakeholder management for clients across the telecoms, healthcare, engineering and retail sectors. Prior to joining CBBC, Mark worked for leading business-to-business research agency, helping multinational clients with their international market expansion plans.
Mark now works closely with a UK tech start-ups on their China go-to-market strategies, and advises Chinese investors looking to set-up in the UK or invest into the UK tech sector.

RELX is a UK-based FTSE 100 global provider of information-based analytics serving business and professional customers across the world. Jeremy joined RELX in February 2019 having previous been a Policy Manager at techUK, the trade association for technology companies, where he worked on various policy issues including leading on data protection and European policy. Prior to techUK, Jeremy worked in the House of Commons. In his role at RELX he is responsible for engaging with policymakers on the key issues which are relevant to RELX’s businesses.

Mark Schaub specialises in foreign direct investment, M&A and restructuring in China. He has advised on foreign investment projects in all major sectors in China with a cumulative value exceeding USD 20 billion. He is familiar with China issues faced by companies of all sizes and is a trusted advisor to many companies ranging from family owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies. Mark is global co-head of our consumer practice.
Mark Schaub has worked as a lawyer in Shanghai since 1993. He was the first foreign partner to join our China firm in 2000. Prior to this, he worked in well-known German and American law firms in their Shanghai offices. He has been consistently awarded Asia Law's “Lawyer of the Year” for corporate work and appears in many guides such as Chambers. Since August 2018 Mark has been splitting his time between London, Frankfurt and Shanghai.
He is also the author of the following books “China: the Art of Law – Chronicling deals, disasters, greed, stupidity and occasional success in China” (CCH) and “China Strategy – Entry, Operation and Exit” (Wolters Kluwer). He is currently working on “All I Want is Everything” a book on the Chinese consumer.

Fabio graduated in International Law, business and politics before moving to China in 2012 for a course on Intellectual Property (IP) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) at Peking University. He started his career at the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce where he also acted as Board Director for two terms between 2017 and 2020.
Part of Hawksford pool of professionals since 2013, Fabio now heads China's Business Development activities while acting as Financial Responsible Person & Company Supervisor for several Chinese subsidiaries of Global Retail clients.

Ting Zhang has 25+ years experience of international business, trade and investment with a China focus. Ting first came to Cambridge to study, and then in 2001 Ting left her career as a banker to set up a China specialist consultancy, advising hi-tech SMEs, FTSE100 corporates, universities, government agencies, European VC Funds, and financial institutions in Wall Street.
In 2017, Ting launched Crayfish.io, the first online platform dedicated to cross-border collaborations with China, and in September 2019 she went on to launch Crayfish Accelerator, a programme providing access to early stage equity funding and business support services to enter the Chinese market. Ting has mentored many budding entrepreneurs and helped them to better prepare for the business challenges ahead.
