整个印欧语中最惨的一个分支当属Anatolian languages了吧。。至少9种语言,印欧大家族中最早的分支,早已全军覆没了。。。根据Kurgan Hypothesis, Anatolian人在大约在4000-3500 BC就从印欧大家族中分离出来了。
Anatolian languages的地理范围以及大致情况如下:
其实,说到Anatolian languages,首先要弄清楚的是,这个分支究竟是Proto-Indo-Enropean (PIE)的daughter language还是sister language.
遗憾的是,现在还没有定论。
传统认为大致是这样的:
1930年代出现了另一种主张,把Anatolian算成PIE的sister language,大致示意图如下:
这种主张在1930-1960期间非常dominated.
这是1990年美国语言学家Eric P. Hamp提出划分方式的:
不过,PIE本身的reconstruction也是在不断发展变化的,紧接着在1990年代初期,大家就达成一致,PIE的reconstruction需要大修改。有意思的是,修改了之后,Anatolian languages和其它PIE的差异就不那么明显了。
以下这些特征,PIE中有,Anatolian中有,但其它印欧语中没有:
1, Laryngeal consonants: *h2, *h3;
2, Heteroclitic nouns: noun declensions: *r in the nominative but in *n in all other cases;
3, Two separate conjugational types characterized by different person-number endings.
以下这些特征,PIE中有,(部分)其它印欧语中(尤其是最接近的Indo-Iranian and Greek)有,但Anatolian中没有:
1, No dual number (found in Greek and Indo-Iranian);
2, No subjunctive or optative moods (found in Greek and Indo-Iranian);
3, Questionable existence of the feminine gender, had animate/inanimate genders (as opposed to feminine/masculine genders in other IE languages);
4, Augment *e- (found in Greek and Indo-Iranian, Phrygian, and Armenian);
5, Much of the Cowgill–Rix system.

但也有并不能证明Indo-Hittite Hypothesis的例子:
Accusative case of the singular *dieu- (这个词根的意思是sky/heaven,后来发展出了god的意思):
关键在于怎样解释这些异常现象。
如果解释为“Anatolian languages确实有这些异常现象”,那么很有可能它是PIE的sister language.
如果解释为“Anatolian languages受到了Anatolia地区其他的非印欧语的影响,才有了这些异常,或自己发展过程中有了这些异常”,那么很有可能它仍然可以算作PIE的daughter language.
总之这个问题还远没有结束。。。也可能是两者的中和:美国语言学家Craig Melchert认为,Anatolian人从印欧大家庭中分离出去之后,其它的印欧人仍然在一起,又发展了一段时间,才渐渐有新的分支(下一个分出去的是吐火罗人)。
