"The overall size of the Chinese economy is very big," said CGTN anchor Liu Xin, "but we have 1.4 billion people, which is three times the population of the United States."
Liu was speaking during a live television discussion with Fox Business Network host Trish Regan on China-U.S. trade issues on Thursday.
Asked about at what point China, now the world's second-largest economy, could "abandon its developing nation status and stop borrowing money from the World Bank," Liu said China's per capita GDP was still far less than a lot of developed countries.
"It is a very complicated issue," Liu added, "because per capita (GDP in China) is very small, but the overall (economy size) is very big."
Liu also believed that China "could do a lot of big things," highlighting the country's international contributions.
"We are the biggest contributor to the UN peacekeeping missions, giving out donations and humanitarian aid because we know we have to grow up."
