Kazakhstan's capital city Astana has been renamed Nur-Sultan in honour of the country's former President
The 2019 World Para Powerlifting World Championships have been rebranded following the renaming of the Kazakh capital city of Astana to Nur-Sultan after the country’s first President.
Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev served as Kazakhstan’s President from 24 April 1990 until his resignation on 19 March 2019.
After taking office, Kazakhstan’s new President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed Astana to be renamed in honour of the former President – a move that was then approved by the Parliament.
Therefore, the World Para Powerlifting World Championships and Junior World Championships will be known from now on as Nur-Sultan 2019. Competition will take place between 12 and 20 July, with the world’s best Para powerlifters competing.
Iran’s strongest Paralympian Siamand Rahman, Mexican legend Amalia Perez, Egypt’s three-time Paralympic champion Sherif Osman and Nigeria’s world champion Lucy Ejike are some of the top names set to participate.
It will be the eighth edition of the World Championships, with the last having taken place in Mexico City in 2017. Uppsala, Sweden, staged the first in 1994 with 137 athletes participating.
