Meet Charlie Mortdecai, a debonair art dealer and part-timerogue who must traverse the globe, armed only with his good looks and charm, ina race to recover a stolen painting rumoured to contain the code to a lost bankaccount filled with Nazi gold.

Based on the series of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli, which werefirst published in the 70’s, Mortdecai isbrought to the big screen by director David Koepp (Premium Rush, Ghost Town)and writer Eric Aronson, and stars Jonny Depp in the title role, supported byGwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and Olivia Munn.

Prime Focus World is pleased to have provided visual effects forMortdecai, delivering 105 VFX shots for the movie. And according to PFW VFXSupervisor Marshal Krasser, working on Mortdecai was a lot of fun.

“It’s greatto have the opportunity to use visual effects to set up a gag or a comedymoment,” said Marshal. “This was a bitdifferent to many visual effects movies, where the storyline is more serious.The work we delivered needed to be seamless, but there is still the opportunityto have a lot of fun with it.”

 视效总监Marshal表示：“能有机会运用视觉特效开个玩笑或营造一个喜剧瞬间是件很棒的事情。这和以往的很多视觉特效电影不同，那些故事情节更加严肃。这次需要我们达到的视觉特效显得更‘悄无声息’一些，但仍有我们发挥创意的空间，视效工作也显得更为有趣了。”

“Therewas a lot of invisible VFX work that the audiences won’trecognize as visual effects,” continued Marshal. “If theaudience doesn’t recognize that they’ve seena visual effect, that’s a goodindication that we’ve done our jobwell. These effects can be the most enjoyable, but can also be the mostdifficult to execute perfectly. ”

 Marshal还说：“影片中有许多视效甚至是观众认不出来的。而往往当一个镜头看不出被加入了视效时，就表明了这个镜头我们的视效工作完成的十分出色。这样在画面中并不凸显的视效会让观影体验非常好，但对制作层面来说却是很难完美执行的。”

The VFX team at Prime Focus World had an opportunity to work ona wide variety of shots for this film, including recreating Red Square for anumber of background shots with Johnny Depp, augmenting environments andexplosions, compositing, sign replacements, and setting the locations and/ormood for certain shots.

  In one particular shot, Mortdecai is being interrogated in ahotel room, and ends up falling through a window. This was an interesting shot,because it involved a mix of different types of work, reconstruction, greenscreen compositing, and the creation of the broken glass as it shatters andfalls.

 Also look out for the scene involving one of the charactersleaning out of a car window vomiting. A fair amount of effort went into ensuingthat the computer-generated vomit looked as real as possible.
