积水潭地铁站A出口往北一些,有条路叫文慧园,路的入口矗立着一个牌楼,名曰小西天。牌楼进去沿着街走大约一百米,有个电影院半隐于众住宅楼之间,那便是中国电影资料馆。
A bit north of Jishuitan Station Exit A, there is a memorial arch named “Xiao Xi Tian” (the Little Western Paradise) standing at the beginning of WenHuiYuan Road. About 100 meters from the arch along the road, there is China Film Archive - a half-hidden cinema which lies among residential buildings.

第一次去资料馆,我还是个北京新人。朋友带我去那看的《天使爱美丽》。我们坐在最后一排,靠近放映机的位置,一瞥就能看见光影中舞蹈的尘。
The first time I went there, I was a newcomer to Beijing. My friend took me there to see Amélie (by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001). We sat in the last row close to the projector, where we could see dust dancing in the projection light at a glance.
让人印象深刻的,不仅是影片的选择、影院的规模,还有举止得体的观众。如果你是爱电影的人,一定能够体会坐在一群真正尊重电影的观众中间是什么感觉。硕大的影厅全场都很安静,观众们会耐心等待片尾字幕结束,之后甚至起身鼓掌。
I was impressed not only by the film selection, the size of the cinema, but also the politeness of the audience. If you are a film lover, you will understand how it feels to sit among people who show the utmost respect for films - being quiet, sitting still till the film completely ends, then even standing up and applauding.
人们来这儿享受光影世界,取经于经典。数字技术的确改变了一切,但也无法取代欣赏一部传统意义上的胶片电影带来的快乐之感。从黑色电影的初期经典到无法在普通影院观赏到的影片,资料馆总是用绝佳的展映让人惊喜连连,且票价亲民,排片随性。
People come here to enjoy and learn from the old classics. Digital technology surely has changed everything, it still cannot take away the pleasure of seeing a film in the traditional, literal sense. From black-and-white film noir to those that cannot be seen in common movie theaters, China Film Archive can always surprise you by presenting great films with no commercial strings attached.
幸运如我,有资料馆当邻居。意外地,好多经典老片第一次都是在资料馆看的。想象一下,你一直想看一部电影,但由于某种原因(比如说懒)一直没看,结果你却得到在大银幕前欣赏它的机会。传说中美丽的偶遇也就大致如此了。当火车进站呼啸而来时,你大概也能和百年前的那群观众一样感同身受。
Lucky for me, I live in the area. I’ve accidentally seen many old classic films for the first in this cinema. Imagine you always wanted to see a certain film, but for some reason (being lazy for instance) you haven’t, and you end up seeing it in a big screen in a fine cinema. Isn’t it a beautiful serendipity? When the train rumbles by, you may feel the same as the audience felt hundreds of years ago.

在资料馆我看过很多本可能不会听说的电影,比如默片《海上的玛利亚》(1930年),且有现场钢琴伴奏。我看过观众们在一年的最后一夜踏入影院,与佳片相伴步入新年:《历劫佳人》(1958年)、《低俗小说》(1994年)、《午夜牛郎》(1969年)。所有影片都会被铭记,就像因它们而被创造的记忆那样不朽。
In the cinema I’ve seen films that I might have never heard of. A silent film with live piano accompaniment (Maria do Mar, by José Leitão de Barros, 1930). I watched audiences filling up the cinema at the very last night of the year and cheering to the new one in the company of Touch of Evil (by Orson Welles, 1958), Pulp Fiction (by Quentin Tarantino, 1994) and Midnight Cowboy (by John Schlesinger, 1969). All those films will be remembered, alive like the memories created around them.
“所有的瞬间都将随时间而逝。”多亏了电影的发明者让我们总能有机会重温过去,犹如身临其境。若你刚好就在北京,你甚至还有个更好的机会。
“All those moments will be lost in time.” Thanks to the inventors of the moving picture we will always have a chance to look back as if we were sitting there. And if you happen to be in Beijing, you have an even better chance.
