The mayuri is a peacock-shaped, bowed stringed musical instrument derived from the esraj. It was popular in the Indian courts of the 19th century. This mayuri is fitted with moveable, arched metal frets and a parchment belly. The wood body is carved and decorated to represent a peacock, including an actual peacockBill and feathers. The mayuri (peacock) is a symbol of India; it is associated with Saraswati, the goddess of music; it is also a symbol of courtship.
