如何区分UK和Great Britain: 是按地理意思区分吗? 分辨UK和Great Britain的不同。
How to understand the difference between the UK, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
A: So where are you from?
B: Scotland. Are you Scottish too?
A: No, I’m English, but....I mean...it’s all, like, the same thing, isn’t it?
B: Not exactly. No. Actually. Not at all.
A: Go on! Scotland’s just well, like a bit of England, isn’t it!
B: (horrified) No it is not.
A: No, well, sorry, Britain I mean.
B: But “Britain” is not “England”.
A: No. I know that. I mean, I’m not stupid or anything. Britain – that’s like, well, England, Scotland and Wales, isn’t it?
B: Not exactly.
A: Yes it is. The UK – United Kingdom.
B: (sighs) The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
A: Yeah, but, like, we’re all the same nation, aren’t we?
B: No, actually. Four nations, one state.
A: Erm, yeah, I get it. The UK, the same as Great Britain...
B: (sighs) Erm, no. Not exactly. Great Britain is a geographical name – it’s the big island with England, Scotland and Wales.
A: OK, right, but we all have the same prime minister, don’t we?
B: Yes. And the same head of state.
A: The Queen!
B: Exactly.
A: And the same government...
B: Well, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own local parliaments.
A: Oh.
B: It’s complicated.
A. I can see that.
