Washington's marble monuments gleam on the banks of the Potomac, reminding visitors of a nation's history and its aspirations.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal … .”

Dawn is a magical time of day in the nation’s capital, as the first rays of daylight bounce off the marble walls and pillars of iconic buildings and monuments, including the monument dedicated to Thomas Jefferson (above), the author of the Declaration of Independence.

Washington is a working city and its business is government, but the city is also the caretaker of a nation’s history and guardian of its heroes and their dreams. Visitors who stroll its green parks and broad avenues not only learn the story of America — its shortcomings and its triumphs — but gain a sense of the spirit that moves a nation to meet its challenges and live up to the aspirations of its founders.
