Thierry Henry: Lonely at the Top: A Biography Hardcover – Unabridged, 8 Nov. 2012

4.3 out of 5 stars 520 ratings

Thierry Henry -- gifted, charismatic and a genuinely world class footballer -- has always been a prolific goalscorer of natural, apparently effortless brilliance. Impossibly good on his day, he has passed into Arsenal legend as the hero of a team that finally ended Manchester United's domination, winning two league titles and three FA cups. He was also instrumental in France's World Cup and European Cup glories in 1998 and 2000 (becoming France's record goalscorer), and continued his incredibly successful career at Barcelona by winning the treble in his second season. But as he approached the autumn of his career, Thierry's crown began to slip -- from the infamous 'Hand of Gaul' incident to a dismal World Cup 2010 campaign. Suddenly, for the first time, a player who Arsene Wenger once dubbed 'the greatest striker ever' was not universally loved and admired. A man who had spent his career at the very top of the game, raised above his peers on a torrent of extraordinary statistics and trophies, began to learn how lonely such a position could be. So who is the real Thierry Henry? Drawing from numerous interviews and impeccable sources, as well as his own observations over the course of Henry's entire career, award-winning author Philippe Auclair has produced the most complete portrait of the Arsenal hero ever to be written. Clear-eyed, lyrical and passionately argued, Thierry Henry: Lonely at the Top is a biographical essay, in the fullest sense of the word -- and as raw, shocking and thought-provoking as it is celebratory of Henry's outstanding flair and talent.

A really magnificent piece of work from Philippe Auclair. He chronicles Henry's life right from the beginning, without dragging on the early life parts (like so many biographies do). The oft omitted Real Madrid saga is a really interesting chapter, and Auclair does a great job in telling the story and keeping the reader engaged throughout. One slightly odd bit is the obsession with talking about the Champions League Semi-Final against Chelsea in the Invincibles Season, but other than a really excellent book that goes through both the good and bad of Henry and lets the reader make the decision about the man.

Got this for my sons birthday. Thierry Henry is one of his favourite players. Being an Arsenal fan. This just seemed to be the ideal present. I read reviews before buying it.

Being an Arsenal, and Henry fan, you could say I am biased, and I am. But, I would also say that previous to reading this I wouldn't have wanted to read a book written someone like myself. I want an open, honest account of someone who has made it to the top of their profession, warts and all.

This book is written extremely well, is engrossing and I was surprised at how many names I recognised spanning Henry's time in football from childhood to his twilight years.

Hard to put down. I recommended this highly, even towards people who aren't necessarily Henry fans..

Really wanted to enjoy this but so much of the book is coloured by the writer's mistrust of Henry that I felt kinda robbed. That said it does cover important chapters of Henry's life and development as a footballer and is an easy read

What a cracking autobiography from a true inspiration, as a passionate Arsenal fan I really enjoyed this read and it provided great insight into one of football's legends and a true Arsenal hero. At a similar price point to other autobiographies out there you can't fault it, it is well written and an enjoyable read.

If you found this review helpful I would greatly appreciate it if you could hit the thumbs up!

I wanted to learn more about the history and background of my favorite player ever and certainly the best player in Arsenal's history as well! I came across this book on Amazon and bought it instantly. The author is annoying in certain instances because he fails to praise Henry and tries to bring him down, but you certainly feel an excitement when the author alludes to his great moments, such as his majestic and triumphant return to Arsenal against Leeds.

A wonderful insight into a hero so many of us, especially gunners fans, adore. Learning a lot about Titi that was never uncovered before. Couldn't put it down. A must read for Arsenal fans, a must read for French football followers; in truth, a strong reccomendation to any football fan. Well done Phillip Auclair, who I also advise you follow on Twitter. #brilliantjob

It's an informative and engaging book, but my biggest take away, after reading, was that the person I really, REALLY would love to be friends with is the author himself, Philip Auclair. If you're a fan of the Gunners, the French National Team, Titi himself, or, I guess even NY Red Bulls or Barcelona, then definitely give this book a read. Genuinely hope Mr. Auclair adds to this after Thierry has spent a few years managing the Montreal Impact.

Great read, especially for Arsenal fans. Loved the fact that the book is not just singing Thierry's song page after page but has revealed complexities of the Arsenal legends character. Chapters covering his role in France's golden generation and insight into his relationship Zidane were a riveting read as well. Making this book a great read page after page.
